Change Nameservers on Namecheap | NOC.org Support

This guide walks you through changing your domain's nameservers at Namecheap to point to NOC. Once updated, NOC will handle DNS resolution for your domain, enabling CDN, WAF, and DNS management features.

Before You Begin

  • Ensure you have already added your domain to the NOC Dashboard and noted the NOC nameservers assigned to your account (typically ns1.noc.org and ns2.noc.org).
  • Have your Namecheap account credentials ready.
  • Review your current DNS records in NOC to confirm they match your existing configuration.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Log in to your Namecheap account.
  2. From the left sidebar, click Domain List.
  3. Find the domain you want to update and click the Manage button next to it.
  4. On the domain management page, scroll down to the Nameservers section.
  5. Change the dropdown from Namecheap BasicDNS (or whatever is currently selected) to Custom DNS.
  6. In the nameserver fields, enter:
    • Nameserver 1: ns1.noc.org
    • Nameserver 2: ns2.noc.org
  7. If there are additional nameserver fields pre-filled with old values, remove them by clicking the X icon next to each.
  8. Click the green checkmark to save your changes.

Namecheap will display a confirmation message indicating that your nameservers have been updated.

Propagation Time

Nameserver changes at Namecheap typically propagate within 30 minutes to 2 hours, though it can take up to 48 hours in rare cases. During propagation, some DNS queries may still resolve through the old nameservers.

Verify the Change

After allowing time for propagation, verify the update with the dig command:

dig example.com NS +short

Expected output:

ns1.noc.org.
ns2.noc.org.

You can also use an online DNS checker like whatsmydns.net to confirm propagation across global resolvers.

Switching Back to Namecheap DNS

If you need to revert to Namecheap's nameservers:

  1. Go to Domain List » Manage for your domain.
  2. Under Nameservers, change the dropdown from Custom DNS back to Namecheap BasicDNS.
  3. Click the checkmark to save.

Troubleshooting

  • Nameserver fields greyed out: Your domain may have a registrar lock enabled. Go to the domain's settings and disable Domain Lock before making changes.
  • Changes not saving: Ensure you are entering only the nameserver hostnames without http:// or trailing dots.
  • Domain still resolving to old IP: Check that your DNS records in the NOC Dashboard match your intended configuration. Also allow up to 48 hours for full propagation.
